Chemical symbol Ta, steel gray metal, belongs to VB group in the periodic table, atomic number 73, atomic weight 180.9479, body-centered cubic crystal, common valence is +5. Tantalum has a low hardness and is related to the oxygen content. Ordinary pure tantalum has a Vickers hardness of only 140HV in the annealed state. Its melting point is as high as 2995℃, ranking fifth among single substances, second only to carbon, tungsten, rhenium and osmium. Tantalum is ductile and can be drawn into thin foils. Its thermal expansion coefficient is very small. It only expands by 6.6 parts per million for every degree Celsius increase. In addition, it has strong toughness, which is better than copper.
