What are the characteristics of electronic-grade fiberglass cloth?
Electronic-grade fiberglass cloth possesses a unique set of properties that make it indispensable for electronics:
High Purity: It is made from E-glass or, more commonly, low-alkali E-glass and advanced S-glass. The glass composition is carefully controlled to minimize impurities that could cause electrical leakage or signal loss.
Excellent Electrical Insulation: It has very high dielectric strength and volume resistivity, making it an perfect insulator for separating conductive copper traces in a PCB.
Low Dielectric Constant (Dk) and Dissipation Factor (Df): This is its most critical characteristic for modern high-speed, high-frequency applications. A low Dk allows electrical signals to travel faster, while a low Df minimizes signal loss and heat generation. Fabrics made from NE-glass or S-glass are engineered for these properties.
Dimensional Stability: It has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). This means it doesn't shrink or expand significantly with changes in temperature during the PCB manufacturing process or device operation, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of fine circuit lines.
High Mechanical Strength: Despite being very thin, it provides excellent tensile strength, stiffness, and impact resistance to the final PCB.
Thermal Resistance: It is inherently non-flammable and can withstand the high temperatures involved in PCB soldering and operation without degrading.
Chemical Resistance: It is resistant to most chemicals, solvents, and moisture, which protects the circuit from corrosion and environmental damage.
