How to Identify Nickel Plate Authenticity?
Methods for Identifying Nickel Plate Authenticity
1. Visual Inspection
Color and Gloss
Authentic nickel plate is silvery white with a shiny surface. If the color is dull, yellowish, or grayish, it may be nickel-plated or made of other metals.
Surface Smoothness
Authentic nickel plates have a smooth surface free of oxidation, rust, or obvious scratches; inferior ones may be uneven or grainy.
Thickness Measurement
Qualified nickel plates are typically 0.03–0.08mm thick. Be cautious if they are outside this range.
2. Physical Identification
Scrape Test
Scrape the surface with a blade. If a golden or golden-red color is revealed, it is nickel-plated. Pure nickel will not show noticeable discoloration.
Weight Comparison
Pure nickel plates are approximately 15% heavier than nickel-plated iron plates of the same volume. This can be measured using an electronic scale.
Salt Water Immersion Method
Immerse the sample in salt water for 4–5 hours. If the salt water turns green or yellow, it is nickel-plated; pure nickel will show no significant change.
Magnetic Test
Pure nickel is slightly magnetic at room temperature. If the magnetism is too strong, it may contain iron or other alloying elements.
III. Simple Chemical Tests
Nitric Acid Reaction
Pure nickel will show no noticeable reaction when nitric acid is dropped on the surface. If it foams violently or changes color, it may be another metal.
Copper Sulfate Test
Wipe the surface and then drop copper sulfate. If it turns purple-red and is non-magnetic, it may be counterfeit high-manganese steel.
IV. Professional Testing Methods
X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry
Analyze the elemental composition to determine whether the nickel content meets the standard.
Electron Probe Analysis
Measure the element distribution on the surface to distinguish between pure nickel and plated materials.
V. Other Auxiliary Methods
Resistance Measurement: Pure nickel has a lower resistance than nickel-plated materials of the same size.
Quality Certification: Verify the product's brand certification or test report. If not, purchase with caution.
