What is cobalt metal?
Cobalt, also known as cobalt in English, is a metallic element with the symbol Co, atomic number 27, and belongs to Group VIII. Cobalt is a shiny silver-gray metal with a melting point of 1495°C and a boiling point of 2870°C. It is ductile and ferromagnetic. Cobalt is relatively stable in air at room temperature, but begins to oxidize above 300°C.
Due to its excellent high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and magnetic properties, cobalt is widely used in industries such as aerospace, machinery manufacturing, electrical and electronics, chemistry, and ceramics. It is a key raw material for the manufacture of high-temperature alloys, cemented carbides, ceramic pigments, catalysts, and batteries.
Cobalt is a very scarce minor metal resource, often known as "industrial MSG" and "industrial teeth." It is a key strategic resource. Cobalt resources are mostly associated with copper-cobalt, nickel-cobalt, arsenic-cobalt, and pyrite deposits. Independent cobalt minerals are extremely rare, and terrestrial reserves are relatively small. Seafloor manganese nodules are an important prospective cobalt resource.
