Processing characteristics of tantalum sheets
High hardness and brittleness
Tantalum has a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7.5, and it is easy to produce cracks or edge collapse during processing.
Countermeasures: Select high-hardness tools (such as PCD/CBN tools) and reduce cutting speed (Vc≤50m/min).
Easy to oxidize at high temperatures
Tantalum reacts with oxygen above 300°C to form a blue oxide film (Ta₂O₅), which affects performance.
Countermeasures: When processing tantalum sheets, nitrogen or argon gas protection is used throughout the process, or oil mist cooling is used.
Work hardening
During cutting, the depth of the hardened layer on the surface of the material can reach 50-100μm, making subsequent processing difficult.
Countermeasures: Adopt a layered processing strategy with a cutting depth of ≤0.05mm per layer.
