Precautions for processing tantalum plates
Prevent oxidation:
The surface of tantalum alloys is easily oxidized to form loose oxides during processing, and can penetrate into the alloy matrix to form a hard penetration layer, which is easy to crack during processing.
During the entire processing process, efforts should be made to protect the metal surface from oxidation, such as using gas protection and other methods.
Choose a suitable processing method:
Tantalum cannot be processed using ordinary methods for processing general metals. Since its recrystallization temperature exceeds 1000℃, it is easy to be excessively oxidized during hot processing, so tantalum is generally not hot processed.
If hot processing is required, a protective covering layer should be made or it should be carried out in an inert gas atmosphere.
Almost all tantalum plates are cold processed, such as cold forging and cold rolling. Starting from tantalum ingots, they are first cold forged into slabs of a certain thickness, and then cold rolled from such slabs.
