A tantalum crucible for melting is designed to withstand the rigors of liquefying metals, alloys, and ceramics, leveraging tantalum's high melting point and non-wetting properties.

 

Tantalum resists wetting by most molten metals (Al, Cu, Ni, Fe) and ceramics (SiO₂, ZrO₂), preventing adhesion and enabling easy retrieval of molten contents. Exceptions include alkali metals (Li, Na) and certain molten salts (e.g., KCl-NaCl eutectic), which may react at >800°C. A compatibility matrix guides selection:
