Physical and chemical properties of metallic bismuth
Physical properties
The melting point of bismuth is 271.5℃, the boiling point is 1564℃, and the density is 9.78 g/cm³. Bismuth exists mainly in the form of compounds in nature, and the main minerals are bismuthite (Bi2S3) and bismuth oxide (Bi2O3). Bismuth has a low melting point and is easy to process. It is often used to make fusible alloys and low-melting solders.
Chemical properties
Bismuth is stable at room temperature and does not react with alkalis and non-oxidizing acids, but is soluble in hot concentrated sulfuric acid. Bismuth selenide and telluride have semiconductor properties and are excellent semiconductor materials.
