Tantalum Rod Characteristics and Applications

Tantalum also has excellent chemical properties and is extremely corrosion-resistant. It is unreactive to hydrochloric acid, concentrated nitric acid, and aqua regia, both in cold and hot conditions. Tantalum immersed in 200°C sulfuric acid for one year suffers only 0.006 mm of surface damage.

Experiments with tungsten plates, molybdenum plates, tungsten rods, molybdenum tubes, tungsten crucibles, and molybdenum crucibles have shown that tantalum rods are unresponsive to alkaline solutions, chlorine, bromine water, dilute sulfuric acid, and many other agents under normal conditions. They react only to hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid. This is relatively rare among metals.

Tantalum's properties give it a wide range of applications. Tantalum can be used as a substitute for stainless steel in equipment used to produce various inorganic acids, extending its lifespan dozens of times. Furthermore, in the chemical, electronics, and electrical industries, tantalum can replace tasks previously performed by the precious metal platinum, significantly reducing costs.

Tantalum is also a key element in the refinement of super-strong steel, corrosion-resistant steel, and heat-resistant steel alloys, providing specialized materials essential for the development of space technologies such as rockets, spacecraft, and jet aircraft. Non-magnetic alloys made from tantalum and tungsten are widely used in the electrical industry. Tantalum carbide, a combination of tantalum and carbon, in particular, possesses exceptional hardness, rivaling that of diamond even under extreme conditions. Turning tools made from tungsten plates, molybdenum plates, tungsten rods, molybdenum tubes, tungsten crucibles, and molybdenum crucibles can cut many hard alloys at high speeds. Drill bits made from tantalum can replace even the hardest alloys or diamond. Therefore, tantalum is considered the "vitamin" of metallurgy.
