What are the technical parameters of tantalum?
What is the boiling point of tantalum?
Tantalum has a boiling point of 5427°C and a melting point of 2996°C. It is a refractory metal, with a higher melting point than other commonly used metals. Tantalum begins to react with oxygen at 300°C in air and with nitrogen at 700°C.
In hydrogen-containing gases, it begins to react with hydrogen at 350°C, and in ammonia, it begins to react with nitrogen at 300°C, all of which form brittle compounds. Therefore, if tantalum equipment and containers are exposed to air during operation, the operating temperature should generally not exceed 250°C.
Only if exposure to air or other ambient conditions can be avoided should higher temperature operation be considered. Tantalum welding and heat treatment should be performed in a vacuum or under an inert gas shield. That is, all thermal processes above 300°C should be performed under vacuum or inert gas shielding. Tantalum is commonly welded using inert gas shielded welding.
The argon purity should not be less than 99.999%. Inert gas protection should be applied not only to the weld pool but also to the weld and heat-affected zone during cooling after welding when temperatures exceed 250°C. Therefore, a protective drag hood is required. It is best to stop the inert gas supply after the temperature drops below 200°C. The weld joint and each weld should appear silvery white or light yellow. Light blue should be polished away, and dark blue, off-white, or white powder should not appear.
