What are the common shapes or types of electronic-grade fiberglass cloth?
The "shape" refers to the weave style and the thickness (often defined by the glass yarn weight), which directly impact the PCB's performance. Common weaves include:
Plain Weave: The most common and tightest weave. Each warp yarn passes alternately over and under each weft yarn. Offers good stability and low yarn slippage. Used in a wide range of standard PCBs.
Twill Weave: A warp yarn passes over and under two or more weft yarns, creating a diagonal pattern. It has better drapeability and a smoother surface than plain weave, often used for thicker laminates.
Satin Weave (e.g., 8-Harness Satin): A warp yarn floats over several weft yarns before going under one. This creates an even smoother surface, which is critical for PCBs with very fine lines and high layer counts. It improves resin wetting and drillability.
Leno Weave: Used for specialized applications where exceptional dimensional stability and open space are needed, often as a boundary layer between other weaves.
The cloth is also categorized by its thickness and weight (e.g., 106, 1080, 2116, 7628). The number is a historical style designation:
106/1080: Very thin, lightweight fabrics used for high-density interconnect (HDI) PCBs, common in smartphones.
2116: A medium-weight, versatile fabric used in a vast array of multi-layer PCBs.
7628: A heavy, thick fabric that provides mechanical strength and is used in thicker PCBs like server motherboards.
The choice of weave and style is a critical engineering decision that balances electrical performance, thickness, mechanical strength, and cost.
